A Big Bostik Pre-Season- Part 1: A to Dereham

By Ian Townsend

Part One of our Pre-Season Guide

It’s July, and social media is full of photographs of red-faced footballers complaining about bleep tests. That can mean only one thing; pre-season is again upon us! Many of our clubs play their first pre-season friendlies this week with the rest beginning their programme soon afterwards, so we thought we’d provide all of you who have been suffering from football withdrawal symptoms with an A to Worthing guide of the scheduled action.

This will be published over four parts- two today, one on Wednesday and one on Thursday- and feature all the matches currently published on the websites of our member clubs. You can also find a list of fixtures in date order listed on our fixtures page.

So here we go. And remember, the Bostik League fixtures for the forthcoming season will be announced on 13th July.

AFC Hornchurch: It was a case of so near but still so far for the Urchins last season, with a fourth place finish in the North Division before an agonising play off semi-final defeat at the hands of eventually-promoted Thurrock. They’ve added thirty goal Brad Warner from rivals Bowers & Pitsea, and must be strong favourites to mount another promotion challenge this season. Fixtures: Sat 15 July, Hullbridge Sports (A); Thurs 20 July, Kingstonian (H); Sat 22 July, VCD Ath (A); Tues 25 July, Leyton Orient (H); Sat 29 July, Whitstable Town (A); Tues 8 August, West Ham Utd (H).

Ashford United: The newly promoted ‘Nuts & Bolts’ ended last season in style with a seven-nil thrashing of Rochester United, but are undoubtedly aware that the forthcoming campaign will pose a much greater challenge. They’ve lined up a challenging and entertaining array of pre-season fixtures which kick off this weekend, when the noisy supporters of Tunbridge Wells arrive at Homelands to advise all and sundry that the Queen likes them, but she doesn’t like the rest of us. Fixtures: Sat 8 July, Tunbridge Wells (H); Tues 11 July, Margate (H); Sat 15 July, Kings Hill (A); Tues 18 July, Maidstone Utd (H); Sat 22 July, Eastbourne Town (H); Tues 25 July, Folkestone Invicta (H); Fri 28 July, K Sports (A); Sat 29 July, Sevenoaks Town (H); Tues 1 August, Whitstable Town (H); Tues 8 August, Kennington (H).

Aveley: The Millers are undoubtedly looking forward to football as a rest cure, having worked tirelessly all summer to prepare their beautiful new Parkside Stadium- as well as having to clean up the endeavours of a collection of mindless vandals who decided it would be fun to wreck their former Mill Field ground. Canvey Island: contrary to reports Canvey Island is not the coldest place in the universe, it’s in third place after Hartlepool and Lydd. Corinthian Casuals: Casuals will hope to go one better after the heartbreak of losing the promotion play-off final to Dorking Wanderers on penalties, but they’ll have to do so without the services of hot-shot striker Shaun Okojie, whose exploits last season have earned him a contract with National League Aldershot Town. Manager James Bracken seems confident, however, and Casuals certainly were not a one man team, so will expect to challenge again. They warm up for the new season as follows: Fixtures: Sat 8 July, Haringey Borough (A); Mon 10 July, Sutton Common Rovers (A); Sat 22 July, Croydon FC (A); Tues 25 July, Corinthian (A); Sat 29 July, Beaconsfield (H); Mon 31 July, Bristol Rovers (H); Sat 5 August, Crystal Palace U23 (H).
