Angels mourn president's passing

Tonbridge Angels are mourning the passing of Maurice Brown, one of the men credited with ensuring the Ryman League club's survival.

Officials at the Longmead Stadium announced the death of their life-president and former director and vice-chairman at the Tunbridge Wells Hospital on Sunday in a statement on Monday paying tribute to his achievements and key role in ensuring their survival.

The Ryman Premier club said: "As many at the club will know Maurice had not been in particularly good health for a while but he was never one to complain and indeed was often seen at Longmead until very recently supporting his beloved Angels.

"Maurice was typical of the kind of director who over time has ensured the long term survival of Tonbridge Angels. Not for him the prestige of the position but rather a desire to work incredibly hard for the club in everything he turned his hand to.

"He was quite simply a supporter who was prepared to use his skills, generosity and talents for the lasting benefit of the club he was so passionate about. He was instrumental in creating the foundations of the existing Tonbridge board including current chairman Steve Churcher in 2009 when Nick Sullivan and Garry Pass resigned.

"On a more personal level he will be remembered for his unique sense of humour which helped at challenging moments and also for his wonderful generosity. Our thoughts at this time are very much with Maurice's wife Linda, who of course herself works so hard for the club, his daughter Jo, and all of the Brown family."
