Belgians boost crowd's collection for foodbank

Enfield Town are looking forward to supporting their local foodbank again after a bumper crowd, including fans from as far away as Belgium, turned out at the Queen Elizabeth II Stadium to see their 3-1 win over Leatherhead in the Ryman League's top flight.

The North Enfield Foodbank's work supporting people in crisis was boosted when just under 500 supporters, including a coachload from Belgium's supporter-run YB SK Beveren, pictured, attended the Ryman Premier fixture on Saturday 14 March.

The fans of the Belgium outfit - formed by supporters out of the ashes of UEFA Cup quarter finalists KSK Beveren - were invited over to Donkey Lane to celebrate the growing bonds between the clubs who first met in the annual Supporters Direct Cup.

The Towners beat Beveren 8-2 last summer to hold on to the trophy and decided to use the fixture to support their local charity with a collection after inviting their Belgian counterparts over for a reunion party which was also open to supporters from around the Ryman League.

Like Enfield Town, the Belgian club holds the honour of being the first fan run club in their country.

The North Enfield Foodbank opened in April 2012 in partnership with the Trussell Trust. Since then it has helped more than 11,300 people, including over 4,600 children. At the last count, volunteers had distributed more than 91 tonnes of food, providing over 100,000 meals to individuals and families in crisis.
