Borough on cloud number nine!

By Ian Townsend

And Millers rescue a point at the death. It's our round up of Monday night's action- and a preview of tonight's matches.

First there came Tonbridge Angels. Then Lewes, Dorking Wanderers, and AFC Hornchurch were put to the sword. Merstham could have been added to that list, but the lights went out. December dawned, and it was the turn of Folkestone Invicta, Bishop's Stortford and Worthing to fail to turn back the yellow tide.

And then, last night, Carshalton Athletic came, saw, and were conquered.

Nine matches, nine victories, twenty seven points, twenty four goals, and Haringey Borough are top of the league!

It took just over half an hour for Borough to open the scoring, Ralston Gabriel firing past Patrick Ohman from the edge of the six yard box- and the striker had his second of the night two minutes later, sending the yellows into the break with a comfortable lead. When Mark Kirby was first to get his head to a corner just after the hour victory was surely complete, and although Ola Sogbanmu gave the Robins hope with twenty minutes to go, forcing the ball home after Borough keeper Valery Pajetet couldn't hold a corner, it wasn't enough- and Borough now hold the highest league position in their history.

Lewes have the chance to retake their top spot when they travel to Merstham on Wednesday. Tonight Margate entertain AFC Hornchurch, with the Urchins searching for their first win since 2nd October, and there is a Sussex derby as Whitehawk entertain Worthing, with the improving Hawks looking for their first victory since September 1st.

In the North Division it looked for almost an hour as if Aveley's unbeaten home record had gone to Great Wakering Rovers. A header from Ollie Woodhouse gave the visitors the lead on twenty three minutes, and six minutes later a Brian Moses thunderbolt made it two. Chances came and went for the Millers, until- four minutes from the end- Andrew Freeman got his eighth of the season to give them hope- hope which was anything but forlorn, as Marcus Milner grabbed an equaliser with one minute to go. Aveley move back to second place, two points behind leaders Bowers & Pitsea.

We've two matches in the South Central Division tonight- and we could have new leaders, if Hayes & Yeading United get just a point at Chalfont St Peter, given their goal difference is a massive +25 better than current table-toppers Marlow! That's not a criticism of Marlow, as United's goal difference is the best in the Division by a margin of +22, which is just astounding given they've played only fourteen league matches.

At the other end of the table the bottom two face off, as managerless Egham Town travel to South Park. A win for the Sparks will see the clubs swap places.

Finally, in the South East Division Sittingbourne, in fifteenth, host ninth place VCD Athletic.
