Bostik Supporters Preview 17/18: Faversham Town

The next in our supporters previews takes us to beer country, as David Hollingsbee gives us a tour of Faversham Town.

We asked a supporter from each of our member clubs to answer the same series of questions as part of our preview of the new season. We also asked them to predict how their particular division would finish, from one to 24- and their answers will be revealed in a collection of Supporters Prediction Tables to be released the day before the big kick off.

Here are the answers of David Hollingsbee for Faversham Town.

1. What was your favourite moment of last season?

The night Faversham Town FA Cup history was made. A Tuesday night FA Cup replay at higher league Hitchin.
Dean Grant (now at Hythe) scored a screamer to give us an early lead. In the second half we were superb as Hitchin threw the proverbial kitchen sink at us-but to no avail. Truly heroic stuff as player after player put their bodies on the line for the cause. Faversham subsequently reached the FA Cup 3rd qualifying round for the first time in their history.
Fantastic performance. Special night.

2. And what was the worst moment?

The capitulation at home to Greenwich Borough. We weren’t at our best that day but had managed to get back to 2-2. Then we contrived to concede 3 of the worst goals I’ve ever seen us concede in all my time watching Faversham Town -all within 20 minutes of the same match. Best forgotten.

3. How will you do this season?

For a club of our size to have made 3 play-offs in the last 5 seasons is an incredible achievement. We definitely punch above our weight. With that record expectations are high – and last season we didn’t quite reach the heights of previous seasons.

However, this season, the squad depth looks stronger. And so, like every other supporter of most clubs, I think a play-off place is very much on the cards.

4. Which matches are you most looking forward to- and why?

If towards the end of the season, with a decent cup run or two already in the bag (being greedy), we’re challenging at the top end of the table-those 6-pointers at the top of the table are the games you want to be involved in. Home, away, whoever the opposition.
Additionally the Kent derbies are always games to be at.

5. What is your favourite away ground?

I visited The Dripping Pan (Lewes) for the first time last season. Straight in at number one on my chart. Great view of the match on the side opposite the new stand (the old wall side). At the other end of the spectrum, a special mention for Chipstead. As a Faversham supporter, my first outside-of-Kent visit and probably my most visited away ground.

6. Who do you consider your biggest rivals- and why?

Of the Kent sides left in this league, over recent seasons Faversham and Hythe have the best record. So I’d probably go for Hythe.

Hythe also keep nicking our players. So I’ll definitely go for Hythe!

7. What advice would you give to an away supporter visiting you for the first time?

As a car-travelling away supporter when traveling to a ground for the first time I personally want to know about the parking. Salters Lane offers a decent sized car park with parking for approximately 150 cars.

If you’re arriving by train, Salters Lane is a 10/15 minute walk from the station, longer if you opt to stop off at The Elephant to sample some of the real ales/ciders on offer.

8. Who is your favourite player (for your club) of all time- and why?

A commonly asked question at all levels of the pyramid. The answer is invariably an ex-player.

And I’m not about to buck the trend. For me, David Botterill. Over 250 appearances and quite simply we looked a better team when Botts was in the line-up.

9. Finally, predict who will fill the top five positions at the end of the forthcoming season:

Carshalton Athletic, Corinthian Casuals, Greenwich Borough, Faversham Town, Hythe Town.
