Bowers go eleven clear as Romford's woes continue

It was a good night for our North Division leaders...not so good for the team at the bottom

It's almost a cliche, but often when the top side takes on the team at the bottom an unexpected result is the outcome- as perhaps Egham Town's draw with Hayes & Yeading United at the weekend illustrated. Last night we played out that scenario in the North Division, as runaway leaders Bowers & Pitsea travelled to Romford- and the dream of an upset lasted around eight minutes.

It was only eight minutes after kick off when an own goal put Bowers ahead, and it was two nine minutes later, David Knight scoring his twenty-sixth goal of the season. Before the break it was 0-3, this time Bradley warner stepping up to fire home his seventh of the campaign, and within seven minutes of the restart it was four, Knight getting goal twenty seven. Calvin Poku replied for the home side, but it was never going to be enough as Bowers picked up their twentieth league victory of the campaign.

Bowers are now eleven points clear with the same number of matches remaining- although Maldon & Tiptree could technically reduce that gap to nine should they win their game in hand. At the other end, Romford are nine points behind Soham Town Rangers and away from safety, with an inferior goal difference of minus twenty one. The end of last season was enlivened by a great escape on their part, but as the gap gets wider the likelihood of lightning striking twice seems rather remote.
