Campaign tackling rail safety

By David Watters

Ryman North Cheshunt are helping to educate young people this summer about the dangers of trespassing on the railways.

The Ambers are currently working closely with Network Rail and Manchester-based company, PDF Sports LTD, to deliver vital safety education to children across Cheshunt as part of the Tackling Track Safety Project.

The nationwide project was devised as an effective and fun way of delivering the important rail safety messages to Year 5 school children across the country by incorporating them into a sporting environment.

Currently being rolled out in 10 schools in close proximity to the line that runs through the area, proud officials at Theobalds Lane say the project is also boosting the club’s community reach with over 3,500 young people set to take part in the programme to highlight the dangers of the railway.

Cheshunt chairman Dean Williamson said: “There is a significant problem locally with people trespassing on the network in the area, particularly at level crossings.

"We are a community focused club and it is vitally important that we are proactive with this education in our community to ensure the safety of our youngsters."

He added: “The railway is an extremely dangerous environment and it simply isn’t worth risking your life trying to save a few seconds misusing a level crossing."

Tackling Track Safety Project director Philip Fitton said: “The TTSP is a fantastic project and this year over 50,000 young people nationally will be educated about the dangers of the Railway in a fun and engaging environment.

“We have been extremely impressed with the staff at the club and they have shown a real passion for what is a massively important topic.

"We are excited about this partnership with Cheshunt, one which will have a significant impact on the lives of the local and wider community.”
