Casuals hit a half century- and the Rebels revival continues

By Ian Townsend

Worthing close the gap at the bottom, whilst Casuals go second

The vast majority of our scheduled matches were called off last night, but those remaining still had their fair share of excitement and drama.

In the Premier Division only one match survived the big freeze, and it was on the Kent coast where Folkestone Invicta entertained bottom side Worthing. Invicta have followed a magnificent November with a mediocre December and that continued as Adam Hinshelwood’s resurgent Rebels maintained a run which has seen them lose only one of their last seven league games. A Kieron Pamment penalty put them ahead in the fifth minute, and although Invicta replied through Joshua Vincent Worthing weren’t to be denied, Jaz Rance putting them ahead once more in the seventy fourth minute to earn a victory which takes them within one point of Tooting & Mitcham United and Harlow Town at the bottom of the table.

The South Division programme was also badly decimated, again leaving one solitary game, Corinthian-Casuals visiting Horsham and their 3G surface at Culver Road. Within twenty minutes the Hornets must have wished that they’d succumbed to the big freeze too, as Casuals had raced into a three goal lead, Reyon Dillon, Gabriel Odunaike and Max Oldham with the early strikes. Odunaike’s goal was their fiftieth in the league this season, making them the first club to reach this milestone, and in the second half Hamilton Antonio got number fifty-two before Toby House got a late consolation for the home side.

In the Third Round of the Velocity Trophy Met Police defeated Romford 4-2.

There are two games scheduled for this evening, both in the South Division, where Cray Wanderers entertain Sittingbourne whilst Thamesmead Town host Guernsey. The latter fixture has a pitch inspection planned for this morning.
