Champions in media spotlight after presentation

Peacehaven & Telscombe

Peacehaven & Telscombe were more than happy to be in the media’s spotlight over the weekend after lifting the Ryman South championship trophy and setting a new record points total.

The champions beat Merstham 3-1 at home on Saturday to rack up 101 points and overhaul Dover Athletic's 2008 total of 98 points in 42 games, prompting a full page article on their success in Sunday’s Non-League Paper and a guest appearance on BBC 5 Live’s Non-League Show.

After presenting the Magpies with their silverware at The Sports Park, pictured, Ryman League Chairman Alan Turvey joined Magpies manager Shaun Saunders on Sunday’s Non-League Show to hail the success of the Sussex club in achieving their second successive promotion and bringing their ground up to standard to take their place in the Ryman League’s top flight next season.

The NLP and the BBC’s Non-League Show also focused on the charity work of Saunders which is winning plaudits and the thanks of clubs throughout Non-League.

Following the death of his son Connor in 2012 when he was the victim on an unprovoked attack while on a night out with friends, the Magpies manager set up the Connor Saunders Foundation to raise funds to provide Non-League clubs with free defibrillators.

As well as a number of Sussex County League clubs, Corinthian Casuals, Burgess Hill Town, Crawley Down Gatwick, Guernsey and the Magpies themselves, are among the Ryman League clubs to have been presented with the life-saving equipment thanks to the work of Saunders and his family.
