Deadline set to replace Wickenden at Capershotts

Ryman North Waltham Abbey have set a Saturday deadline for potential successors to departed manager Paul Wickenden to formally apply for the post.

Wickenden, pictured, left Capershotts at the weekend after six years at the Essex club, five as manager.

His last act as manager was to hand out the accolades at the club's presentation night on Friday night when prolific striker Jason Hallett swept the board to collect the Manager's, Chairman's and Players' Player of the Year awards as well as Abbey's Golden Boot.

Officials say Wickenden's departure came after a private meeting with Waltham Abbey chairman John Martin and the retirement of his right hand man Ray Wickenden at the end of the campaign.

In a statement on their website confirming the deadline of Saturday 23 May for candidates, the club said: "Following six years in the Abbey hot-seat the club has opted for a change of direction and invites applicants for the managers` role.

"A covering letter, CV and expectations should be sent in strictest confidence to the secretary davehodges44@yahoo.co.uk. All mails will be acknowledged and successful parties will be invited for interview."

Paying tribute to their former manager who guided them to safety with a 17th placed finish, the club added: "Paul Wickenden took over the manager's role following relegation from the Ryman Premier Division and has worked tirelessly for the club during his tenancy with his commitment second to none, despite offers from other clubs.

"The club have placed on record its thanks to Paul Wickenden and all his team who have worked with him over the years and have wished him every success in the future."
