We are sad to announce the passing of our former fixtures secretary

The Bostik League is sad to announce the passing of Derek York.

Derek may have been known to you from his time as Secretary of Ilford FC, up until their eventual demise and amalgamation with Leytonstone in 1979, or from his time as an Isthmian League Secretary, when he was particularly known for printing and distributing our Bulletin.

In more recent years Derek was active in Sussex football, serving on the board at both Eastbourne United and Hailsham Town, serving as both Secretary and Chairman at the latter. He was also keenly involved in cricket, serving in an executive capacity at Sussex County Cricket Club.

Tributes have been paid to “Yorkie” across Sussex, where he was well known, extremely well liked and greatly appreciated. Bostik League Chairman Nick Robinson added a tribute of his own, saying:

“Derek was a fine man, a fine servant to the Isthmian League and a fine servant to Ilford FC. It fell to him to announce to the League Council that his club was about to be no more; a duty which he performed with tears in his eyes, such was his attachment and dedication. He went on to be a mainstay of the Sussex Non-League scene and has left a great legacy.”

Condolences go from all at the League to Derek’s family and friends. His funeral is at Eastbourne Crematorium on Thursday 31st January, at 1.45 PM.

You may also appreciate this tribute from the Eastbourne Herald.
