Don't mention Guernsey in East Grinstead!

Guernsey

Guernsey’s sports stars pulled off what must be a unique double in UK sport on Saturday when the Green Lions won 5-1 in Ryman South at East Grinstead Town.

While Tony Vance’s side were hammering The Wasps on the mainland at East Court in only their second season of Isthmian League football, the island’s rugby stars were beating their counterparts from the West Sussex town 33-28 at the home they share at Footes Lane in National League 3 London & SE!

Guernsey’s footballers were only admitted to mainland football in 2011 amid a blaze of publicity and they share another proud link with the rugby club who became the only fully amateur side playing in rugby’s national set-up when they won promotion in 2012.

Like the island’s footballers, their ladies have struggled to play competitively on the mainland after initially being rejected on logistical grounds but on Sunday wrote national headlines of their own when they won an historic first ever UK league game.

Meanwhile, Vance told the BBC on Tuesday that it is too early to talk about promotion to the Ryman's top flight despite three consecutive wins lifting his side to seventh. The Green Lions had lost four straight matches before scoring 15 goals in their last three, including Saturday's 5-1 victory over East Grinstead.

Ahead of their midweek trip to third-placed Faversham, Vance told BBC Guernsey: "We're not even in the play-off places yet, we haven't earned the right to even talk about promotion. We had a terrible start and we're playing catch up.

"The last two performances we've been ruthless and perhaps we've got our mojo back. We've almost got a full deck of cards to play with, defensive options, midfield options and of course the fantastic forward options we possess."

He added: "I'm not going to put any more pressure on us; we try to win every game anyway and that's what people expect so we've got to keep doing the right things and hopefully the rewards will come."
