Edwards goes after Konchesky coup

Fans of Billericay Town went went through a rollar-coaster ride of emotions on Thursday after manager Craig Edwards stood down within hours of the Ryman Premier's Blues signing former England international Paul Konchesky.

Edwards resigned on Thursday evening after seven years at the helm soon after the 35-year-old former West Ham, Fulham, Leicester City and Liverpool defender, pictured, completed his much anticipated switch from Gillingham to New Lodge.

The former boxer and popular and respected figure in the Non-League game led the the club to it's first Essex Senior Cup title since 1976 after taking the helm in April 2010 before guiding the Blues to Ryman League glory and promotion to National League South.

In a statement confirming his departure, the Blues said owner Glenn Tamplin would take over on Saturday as caretaker manager for the club's trip to Harlow Town in the Ryman League's top flight before wishing Edwards well and thanking him for his efforts.

The club said: "The management, fans and everyone linked with the club would like to thank Craig for a great seven years and wish him all the best for the future."

Left-back Konchesky arrived from League One Gillingham having started his professional career with Charlton Athletic where he made 149 appearances. As well as scoring for West Ham United in the 2006 FA Cup Final against Liverpool, he also enjoyed loan spells at Tottenham Hostpur, Nottingham Forest and QPR.
