Canvey link with charity

PREMIER Division club Canvey Island have announced an official charity partner for the forthcoming season.

It is the Castle Point Sports Club for the Disabled, which was formed in 1977 and provides a wide range of sports and activities for disabled people of any age to enjoy twice a week, at the Lake View Hall in Winter Gardens School on Fridays, and also at Runnymede Swimming Pool on Sundays.

The aim of CPSCD is to offer a safe, secure and private environment for their members to enjoy sport, helping them to build confidence in what they can do and go on to achieve even more.

However, a story recently published in the Evening Echo revealed the club "faced being shut in September because it has been unable to secure any long-term funding."
Last Friday, Canvey Island players Leon Gordon and Danny Heale went along to the Lake View Hall to meet the group and join in various sports including pool, snooker, table tennis, badminton and basketball.

Our aim for this season is not only to help CPSCD raise funds to enable them to continue to do the fantastic work they do, but also to raise the awareness of the organisation so that new members can benefit from the group and other fundraising opportunities can open up.

A club spokesman commented: "As a community-focussed club, when we read the story in the Echo about the funding issues that CPSCD are facing we wanted to see how we could help.

"Having gone along to see the what CPSCD do in action with Danny and Leon, we were even more convinced that this is an organisation that need to continue long into the future."

CPSCD will be our guests at Saturday's match against Billericay Town at Park Lane, and we will be holding a bucket collection to mark the beginning of what we hope we be a very successful partnership.
