Milestone night, whatever the result

By David Watters

Aveley secretary Craig Johnson is hoping the bumper crowd expected at the last ever game at Mill Field on Easter Monday will cheer Terry Spillane's side into the Ryman North's promotion play-offs.

The Millers - three points off the play-off spots and hosting third-placed AFC Hornchurch - need three points to keep their hopes alive from their final game at their home for the last 65 years before moving down the road next season to play at Parkside. A £4.8 million sporting facility currently being built, pictured, the new stadium is due to be opened in July after the latest state-of-the-artificial turf surface is laid.

The sale of Mill Field, Aveley's home since 1952, has helped to fund the community facility which also includes a separate full-size grass floodlit pitch and two junior grass pitches.

Johnson, who has been involved with the Essex club since 1979 as a player and official and is also the Ryman League's vice-chairman, admits the final fixture will be tinged with sadness whatever the result as a new era starts for the Millers.

Speaking ahead of the 6.30pm kick-off in Essex, put back to help neutrals and Easter groundhoppers attend the milestone match, he said : "I am privileged to help move us forward but it is tinged with a little bit of sadness as it’s a great little stadium and I have spent half my life trying to repair things here!

"It is no secret that Aveley is my life and it has been a dream of mine to help us move forward so I am so proud of everyone's efforts and looking forward to a great future for the club at our new home."
