Town in the running for top pitch award

Hanwell nominated for Institute of Groundsmanship gong

Manchester City, Southampton, Coventry City, Hanwell Town. What do these clubs have in common? No, they haven't all been managed by Mark Hughes, they've all been nominated for Institute of Groundsmanship awards!

Last month we wrote about the club's new phone-operated pitch to gasps of general amazement, and now they are one of only two clubs up for the honour of winning the Community Sports Club Grounds Team/Person of the Year Award, at a star-studded gala event to be hosted by Mark Saggers from talkSPORT radio at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole, on Wednesday 31 October.

IOG Chief Executive, Geoff Webb stated:

“We should applaud everyone who has reached the shortlist – and those who have been highly commended – in an annual event that attracts national and regional TV, radio, social media and press coverage, and acknowledges the efforts of our armies of grounds people who prepare playing surfaces at all levels of sport.

The quality has really been exceptional – with the judges commenting that some of the applications have been the best they’ve seen in the awards’ history – and a host of new nominees have come to the fore, too.”

Hanwell Commercial Director Nigel Hunt added:

“It was due to the continued investment at the club that we were nominated for this award, and we have now been shortlisted as one of the two finalists, which is fantastic.

We have worked hard over the past two years upgrading the ground. This year has seen the biggest investment in the clubs history with the installation of over 4000 metres of drainage, and a state of the art Rain Bird irrigation system which has recently been installed at two Premier League Clubs.”

Hopefully we'll be able to bring you more news on this on 1st November!
