Weekend Round Up!

By Ian Townsend

It’s Monday morning again, sadly. But don’t worry, we have a handful of League matches, a collection of FA Cup Replays and a veritable feast of Velocity Trophy games to keep us going until Saturday dawns once more!

There seems to be no contest over who wins our (hypothetical!) performance of the weekend award. Welling United sit in eleventh place in National League South, and perhaps underestimated Haringey Borough- but they did so at their peril as a Ralston Gabriel double sent Borough sailing through to the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 away victory. Much credit should also go to Thamesmead Town, who entertained Billericay Town at Princes Park on Sunday- Jermaine Pennant and all- and earned a replay with a 1-1 draw, Tom O’Connor equalising after Jake Robinson’s eleventh goal of the season had put the blues ahead. There were also fine FA Cup wins for AFC Sudbury, AFC Hornchurch, Dorking Wanderers, Folkestone Invicta, AFC Hornchurch, Herne Bay, Margate, Leiston, Harlow Town and Leatherhead.

Much credit should also go to Potters Bar Town, who travelled to National League South Hampton & Richmond Borough and were four minutes from victory, earning a magnificent 1-1 draw and a replay on Tuesday, and to Wingate and Finchley, who ended with a nil-nil draw against a Hemel Hempstead Town side who haven’t yet replaced Jake Robinson’s goals. Heybridge Swifts lost their one hundred per cent record but not the tie, travelling to an inconsistent Metropolitan Police and putting in a fine performance to draw 2-2.

Back in the Bostik League, and it was Premier Division joy for Worthing supporters on Sunday- and goodness knows they deserve some- as their side came from 2-0 down at ‘home’ to Staines Town to earn their first point of the season. Despite a request from the Mackerel Men, that result does not automatically get caretaker manager John Lock the Manager of the Month Award! On Saturday Merstham and Brightlingsea Regent shared six goals, a Tom Richardson brace in the last ten minutes of the match earning James Webster’s side a point.

In the North Division Bowers and Pitsea went goal mad at Romford, moving up to fourth place with a 5-0 victory, whilst there were eight goals at Tilbury, Norwich United picking up their first point of the season with a last minute Lee Will equaliser in a 4-4 draw.

In the South Division the Rooks of Lewes moved into second place with victory over Cray Wanderers, but it’s Whyteleafe who are top, earning a point at King George’s Field with a solid display at Corinthian-Casuals. South Park are in third, winning 3-1 in Guernsey, whilst Sittingbourne sit fifth after defeating VCD Athletic 3-2. Hythe Town are in eighth after a narrow victory over Ashford United, whilst Greenwich Borough are ninth after a 4-1 victory over Molesey.

The East Grinstead world went rather goal crazy as they walloped seven goals past the sorry Musselmen of Shoreham, who got two in reply.
