Bostik 17/18- a season in review: February

By Ian Townsend

February brought more terrible weather, and the gap closed in the Premier Division- whilst the Urchins seemed to be running away in the North.

On the pitch

We started the month at Culver Road, as Horsham fell to defeat against a Jack Barham inspired Greenwich Borough in our #bostikmatchday feature. Elsewhere Billericay were drawing in Harrogate in the FA Trophy, which gave Dulwich Hamlet the chance to go back to the summit- but they failed to do so, being held by Met Police. AFC Hornchurch and Lewes remained top in North and South.

Cray Wanderers were to have a turn at the top of the South Division on 11th, proof positive that a plastic pitch is a practical asset as games began to be postponed in large numbers, but by the end of the month the Rooks were at the summit again and Wanderers had fallen to fourth.

As the month progressed the big story was a loss in form from Billericay, and as the month came to an end Glenn Tamplin decided to sack himself after defeat to Wealdstone in the FA Hamlet were inconsistent too, and Margate could have gone top with victory over Needham Market- but lost. We featured a series of images of Bostik League Grounds in the snow. We entitled it no. 1 in a series of 1.

We were wrong.

By 24th February, AFC Hornchurch had an eleven point lead over Bowers & Pitsea in the North Division.

Off the pitch

Witham Town superfan James Beardwell went viral after a video of him singing solo ended up sweeping the nation, Tonbridge Angels began to release players after cutting their playing budget, and three clubs- Met Police, Dereham Town and Potters Bar Town- had three points deducted for playing an ineligible player.
