Fallon recommends his successors

Soham Town Rangers have named senior players Robbie Nightingale and Dave Theobald as their new joint managers after Steve Fallon stepped down at the Ryman North club after three and a half years at the helm.

The Greens announced on Thursday that the former Histon boss, pictured, had decided to end his reign for personal reasons and their difficult start to the season, made worse by Saturday’s 3-1 FA Trophy exit to Carlton Town in the competition's preliminary round.

Fallon's coaching staff of Ian Hart and Wayne Goddard have also left Julius Martin Lane after officials "reluctantly" accepted his resignation and recommendation following talks to appoint Nightingale and Theobald as his successors.

Former Brentford, Swansea City and Cambridge United defender Theobald, 36, and ex-Cambridge City and Histon midffieler Nightingale, 35, will take charge for the first time on Saturday at Brightlingsea Regent with the fourth from bottom Greens looking to record a third win of the season after collecting seven points from their 12 league outings so far.

Fallon, along with his number two Hart, arrived at Soham in March 2012 following the departure of Andy Furnell and Andy Coleman. After collecting enough points in the remaining games of the campaign to keep the Greens in the Ryman League, they recorded the club’s best ever league finish the following season in just missing out on making the promotion play-offs.

Under Fallon's guidance, the Greens also reached three Cambridgshire Invitation Cup finals, winning the trophy in 2014 after a season that saw Fallon collect three manager of the month awards.

The Greens paid tribute to Fallon and his staff in a statement on their website before backing their new managers who joined the club in the summer from Royston.

The club said: "Soham Town Rangers FC will always be grateful to Steve, Ian and Wayne for their hard work during their management reign at the club and wish them well for the future. Hopefully, Steve will stay involved with the club for the time being and help the new management team settle in to their new roles.

"The club are therefore pleased to announce that following discussions with Fallon, senior players Robbie Nightingale and Dave Theobald will immediately take over as the club's new management team. Robbie and Dave are looking forward to the challenge of turning round the club's fortunes this season, starting at Brightlingsea Regent on Saturday."
