Fixture is fundraiser for injured pair

By David Watters

Cheshunt are donating all the matchday profits from their Ryman North clash with Soham Town Rangers on Tuesday night to the fund supporting Shaun Whiter and Joey Abbs, the footballers who suffered horrific life-changing injuries in a hit and run accident.

Whiter, who was playing for Newmarket Town, needed a double leg amputation while former Cambridge United, Newmarket Town and Soham Town Rangers star Abbs, pictured left, suffered serious crush injuries when they were hit while changing a tyre in Suffolk on July 1.

The driver responsible has since been sentenced to three and a half years in prison and the Ambers say they'll be adding to the thousands of pounds that have already been raised to help White, 27, and Abbs, 30, rebuild their lives.

More than £16,000 was raised at Cambridge United last weekend at a four club tournament involving their former clubs and the Ambers are hoping for big turnout at Theobalds Lane.

A spokesman said: "This evening Cheshunt Football Club will be donating all profit from our gate money to the growing fund. We hope you too will all give generously to support the fund that has been set up to support these two lads who have suffered such a life changing and horrific event."

With the backing of the Cambridgeshire FA, Soham Town Rangers teamed up with Newmarket Town, Cambridge City and Cambridge United to play in the 11-a-side tournament during a #FootballFamilyDay at the League Two club's Cambs Glass Stadium on Sunday 9 October. In total, more than £100,000 has now been raised by the family and friends of the pair.
