Free entry to encourage female fans

Enfield Town will be backing a new drive to encourage more female fans to enjoy watching live football when they host Havant & Waterlooville in the Ryman League's top flight next month.

As part of the nationwide 'Women at the Game' initiative, the Towners say all women and girls will be offered free admission to their Ryman Premier clash with the Hawks at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium II on Saturday 4 March to mark International Women's Day which falls a few days later on Wednesday 8 March.

The Towners - who celebrated their 15th anniversary last season as the first supporter-owned club in the country - are keen to support an initiative that supports their own aims of being an inclusive and community club for all.

Enfield Town vice-chairman Paul Millington said: “We will be creating an environment on the day in which women can enjoy their experience, perhaps for the first time, of attending a live football match. The club will be arranging for female stewards to help familiarise newcomers with the facilities and a reserved seating area will be available.”

The 'Women at the Game' is the brainchild of Altrincham fan Jacqui Forster, pictured above, who launched the project this season to give more women and girls a real taste of live football in a supportive environment.

Forster said: "I think that meeting other women before the game, entering the ground together and wherever possible spending the match with their new found friends and even travelling home together, will make more women of all backgrounds, ethnicity and religion more likely to give 'going to the footie' a go."

She added: “This is really about making friends with other women who support the same club. I simply want to enable more women to feel happy going to watch sport, particularly men’s football."
