Free football for Folkestone folk!

Invicta take on Thamesmead on Saturday, and admission is free!

Many of the respondents to our supporters survey sing the praises of an away day at the Fullicks Stadium, and this weekend both they and the locals can enjoy an afternoon of football without spending a single penny, as Invicta take on Thamesmead Town in a pre-season friendly.

The clubs are competing for the Sid Burvill Trophy, in memory of the late and dearly missed Folkestone gateman.

Manager Neil Cugley said: “I’ve enjoyed this pre-season which has gone really well as the new players continue to settle in.
“We’re hoping that as many people as possible – including plenty of new faces - come along on Saturday so we’ve made it free admission to give everyone a chance of see what the club has to offer.”

The in-form Sam Hasler returns after a short break, and 22-year-old trialist Joe N’Gessan looks likely to get another chance to impress. The Lewisham-born forward whose youth career included spells at Bromley, Stevenage Borough and Queen’s Park Rangers, played three games for Maidstone United last year and was introduced to the club by Invicta striker Yusuff.

Looking back on Monday’s 3-1 defeat by a useful Dagenham & Redbridge side, boss Cugley said: “It was another good game of football – they brought some very good players down, especially among the forwards who are as good as any we’ve faced this pre-season.

Their manager, John Still, loved it and rated it an excellent work out for his players too.”

Unlikely to play, however, is last season’s top scorer Joe Taylor who hurt his knee in a collision with the goalkeeper in the friendly win at Ashford last week. “We’re hoping that Joe is going to be okay for the start of the season at Enfield on August 12th, when I’d like to be able to take the strongest squad that I can.”

Close-season signing Kieron McCann, who joined from Sevenoaks Town, again impressed on the left side of midfield and the manager said: “It was the best we’ve seen from him so far.
He’s come to us from a lower league and like some of the other lads we’ve had such as Sam Hasler and Joe Taylor he’s got to realise that we need that kind of performance from him every week if he’s going to keep a regular place in the starting line-up.”

Kick off on Saturday is at 3PM.
