Hamlet maintain their lead, Billericay crash once more, whilst Greenwich and Walton go goal crazy

By Ian Townsend

It was an important day for sides at the top- and bottom- of our divisions. Here’s what happened.

League Leaders Dulwich Hamlet remain in limbo off the field, but on it they seem closer than ever to promotion- helped not only by their own form but by the unlikely implosion at Billericay Town. Travelling to Needham Market yesterday, Nyren Clunis scored in his third successive game, and indeed on this occasion scored twice, as Hamlet saw off the Marketmen 3-0. His two goals came in the first half, and shortly after the break Nathan Ferguson made it three as the side in pink and blue eased home.

Folkestone Invicta are having a magnificent season, and this continued at the Fullicks Stadium as they hit five goals against Metropolitan Police. Adam Yusuff gave them the lead in the thirteenth minutes before Jay Gasson equalised five minutes later, but by half time further Invicta goals from Sam Hasler and Johan Ter Horst had extended their margin. Joseph Taylor made it 4-1 just after the break before Aaron Goode reduced the arrears once more, but Invicta were not downhearted and added a fifth through Kieron McCann, sending them into second place.

Billericay Town lost their sixth league match from their last seven at Hendon- and boy, how they lost, Gary McCann’s side taking full advantage of the turmoil which seems to be growing amongst Glenn Tamplin and Harry Wheeler’s charges. It is reported that several blues players actually left the ground before kick off, and a video on social media also shows Tamplin leaving twenty minutes before the end as Hendon swept to a 4-1 victory. Nil-nil at half time didn’t suggest there would be five goals in the second half, but Niko Muir felt otherwise, and within fifteen minutes of the restart had scored two. Josh Walker soon added a third, and whilst Jamie O’Hara pulled a goal back with eight minutes to go Walker also had the last word, passing the ball into the net in added time to make it 4-1 and lift the Greens into fifth place.

Sitting between Billericay and Hendon are Margate, who yesterday took the lead at home to Enfield Town through David Martin only to find themselves leaving Hartsdown Park with only a point, Dernell Wynter grabbing an equaliser two minutes from the end.

Staines Town dropped to seventh, and had a day to forget at Wheatsheaf Park as Leiston gave them a hiding and leapt over them into sixth place. Jack Ainsley and Darren Mills put the away side two up within sixteen minutes, and although the Swans pulled a goal back before the break, Lewis Driver the scorer, it was the other Driver, Leiston manager Glenn, who went home delighted as his side added two more in the second half through Jake Reed and Patrick Brothers- and recorded their sixth victory from seven.

At the other end of the Premier Division table, bottom side Burgess Hill Town finally got a victory, and with it closed to within three points of second bottom Tooting and Mitcham United- with three matches in hand and a superior goal difference. In winning they also plunged their hosts, Lowestoft Town, deeper into the mire- the Trawler Boys now only five points ahead of the Hillians. The away side took the lead in the twentieth minute through Lucas Rodrigues, and the same player doubled it on the hour before Travis Cole reduced the arears as the game drew to a close. The Terrors were away to a resurgent Worthing, and fell three-nil; Keiron Pamment, Harvey Sparks and Reece Myles-Meekums giving the Mackerel Men a comfortable victory.

Harlow Town eased their relegation worries with a 2-1 win over Leatherhead, Martin Foy giving the Hawks an early lead before Robbie Martin doubled their advantage. Aron Pollock did pull a goal back for the Tanners just before the end, but it was too little, too late.

Harrow Borough leapfrogged hosts Kingstonian at Fetcham Grove, a single goal from George Moore giving them the points, whilst in the Surrey derby Dorking Wanderers warmed up for the visit of Leatherhead with a 4-0 hammering of Merstham- goals from Luke Moore, Daniel Walker, Lewis Taylor and Gareth Chendlik the difference.

Two late goals gave Thurrock the points in a three-one victory at Brightlingsea Regent. Ronnie Winn gave the away side a first half lead before Billy Hunt equalised, but Remi Sutton and Reece Cave scored in the last eight minutes to take the points back to Ship Lane. Finally for the Premier Division, Wingate & Finchley got back to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Tonbridge Angels. Reece Beckles-Richards and Luke Ifil made it 2-0 before half time, and although Sonny Miles reduced the arrears Wingate held on for the points.

The big match in the North Division happened on Friday night as Bowers & Pitsea closed the gap on AFC Hornchurch by beating the Urchins 1-0, but yesterday Potters Bar Town ominously closed the gap on second place Bowers with a 1-0 victory over sixth place Dereham Town, Ben Ward-Cochrane with the goal. Canvey Island are six points back in fourth place, yesterday defeating Witham Town by four goals to one. They took a three goal lead, Mitchell Gilbey and Ryan Charles scoring in the first half before Martin Tuohy made it three five minutes before the end, and although Chinedu Osadebe pulled a goal back with a minute to go, Ryan Melaugh then immediately made it 4-1.

The North Division match of the day was between playoff chasing Haringey Borough and Heybridge Swifts at Coles Park, and it was the home side who swept into a three-nil lead, Ralston Gabriel, Anthony McDonald and Andre McCollin finding the net. But this Swifts side struggles to know when it’s beaten, and staged an exhilarating comeback, goals from Tambeson Eyong, Matthew Price and Kreshnic Krasniqi earning a point which sees Borough in fifth and Swifts in tenth, but only two points off a playoff place with two games in hand.

Maldon & Tiptree, in seventh, fell to a 2-0 defeat at home to Bury Town, who move up to ninth- a goal in each half from Jack Lankester and Cemal Ramadan making the difference, whilst Barking are eighth, leaving it late to pick up three points with a 2-0 victory at Mildenhall Town, Billy Jones and Ben O’Brien with the goals.

At the other end of the table Romford remain bottom but picked up a point at home to AFC Sudbury, celebrating the announcement that they’ve lined up a ground share with East Thurrock United by equalising through Ayodeji Olukoga after Phil Kelly had given the away side the lead in a match which kicked off an hour and twenty minutes late due to traffic congestion on the M25.

Norwich United are six points clear of The Boro, and yesterday Matt Blake’s second goal in two games earned them a point away to Waltham Abbey, for whom Mitch Hahn got the equaliser. Cheshunt are two further points clear, beating the side above them, Brentwood Town, by two goals to nil due to a second half double from Jason Hallett, whilst one place further saw Ware give away a 2-0 lead over Grays Athletic to draw 2-2. Jordon Watson and Dave Cowley put Ware ahead, before two in a minute from Tommy Wade gave eleventh place Athletic a point.

Soham Town Rangers (Sam Mulready) and Aveley (Tom Richardson) got a point each and a goal each, whilst the other match was a five goal thriller, ten man Hertford Town defeating Tilbury 3-2. Harry Norman gave the away side the lead before Charlie Ruff and Jason Beck gave Hertford the half time bragging rights, and although Jack Carlile drew the Dockers level a goal from Michael Toner sealed a home victory.

In the South Division leaders Lewes recovered from their midweek loss to Carshalton Athletic by easing to a 3-0 victory over VCD Athletic, Gus Sow, Jonte Smith and Billy Medlock with the strikes in front of 777 at the Dripping Pan, whilst second place Corinthian-Casuals slipped up at home to Cray Wanderers, losing 1-0 in our Bostik Matchday feature which you can find HERE. Carshalton Athletic couldn’t make a great deal of headway in third, held to a goalless draw at home to Guernsey, whilst Greenwich Borough closed to within two points of Wanderers with an EIGHT one win at South Park. Jack Barham, Ryan King-Elliott and Tom Carlse put the Cannons three-nil up at the break, and a second from Barham was followed by a Travis Gregory double, augmented by Nassim Dukali and Omari Delgardo-Hibbert. Jack Mazzone got a consolation- if you can call it that- for the Sparks.

One place below Borough, Walton Casuals also went rather goal crazy, firing SEVEN without reply at home to Herne Bay and in so doing increasing the gap between themselves and Hythe Town to six points. Josh Kelly got a hat trick, Youseff Bamba a double, and the other goals came from Joe Hicks and an own goal.

Hythe Town, in seventh place, had to come from 2-0 down away to Whyteleafe to grab a last minute point. Lanre Azeez and Vance Bola left Leafe seemingly comfortable at the break, but late goals from Zak Ansah earned Town a share of the spoils. Just behind Leafe, in ninth place, Phoenix Sports also had to come from two goals down, in their case at home to Molesey for whom Tayo Oyebola and Ross Chalke struck early on, before Ben Allen and Ashley Probets evened things up. Hastings United are tenth, recovering from the loss of a Luke Harvey goal at Faversham Town to score two of their own and take the points, Sinnkaye Christie and Davide Rodari finding the net.

A Danny Parish goal gave Thamesmead Town victory over Chipstead, whilst Sittingbourne defeated Shoreham by the same scoreline, Germaine Dua with a second half goal. Horsham had a terrible day at Culver Road, conceding four for the second time this week, this time to Ramsgate, for whom Aaron Millbank scored a hattrick. George Landais found the net for the Hornets, whilst Alfie Paxman was the Rams other scorer.

Finally, Alex Gaggin put East Grinstead Town two up at home to Ashford United before Clarke Woodcock pulled one back. There were them two goals in the dying moments, one for each side, as Charlie Postance ensured the points stayed in Sussex before an own goal made the scoreline more respectable.
