Hawks comeback scoops Macron award

By Peter Butcher

THE Macron Team Performance of the Month awards for January were announced today.

It's the nature of these awards that they rarely go to teams at the top of the table, since they are given for a single exceptional performance and thus, usually, are earned by a struggling team upsetting the odds.

This month, however, runaway leaders Whitehawk collect the Premier Division prize for their remarkable comeback to beat Canvey at East Brighton Park on the first Saturday of 2013.

Hawks were 4-1 down with only 15 minutes to go but produced a storming finish as goals from Danny Mills, Josh Jones, Michael Malcolm and Mills again earned them a 5-4 victory.

The Ryman North award also departs from convention in that it is not the reward for a victory.

When Redbridge travelled to Maldon on January 26 they were 20th in the table, 48 points behind their hosts who led the table by ten points.

Maldon led 2-0 with 15 minutes left but two Jacob Cleaver goals earned the Motormen a shock 2-2 draw and the Macron award for the division.

On the same day Whitstable Town's home game against Worthing went ahead after heroic efforts by officials and fans to clear snow from the pitch.

Their efforts were richly rewarded as the Oystermen, 19th in the table, romped to a 4-0 victory over a Worthing side with one of the league's best away records, and that was judged to be the best performance of the month in Ryman South.

The Macron Manager of the Month awards will be announced tomorrow.
