Hospice gains from FA Cup run

ST LUKE'S Hospice in Basildon received a cheque for £2,000 from the FA Community Shield Fund at East Thurrock United’s home match with Concord Rangers on Saturday.

Volunteers from the hospice also carried out a collection at the local derby match and sold yellow ribbons to supporters.

The money was presented by East Thurrock, on behalf of the FA, after they were invited to nominate a community-based initiative as a reward for reaching the first round proper of last season’s competition. Rocks played Macclesfield in the first round and lost 3-0 in a televised fixture.

“That match remains perhaps the highlight in the club’s short history and we are delighted to add further to the legacy of a truly wonderful day by nominating St Luke’s which is a charity that does a huge amount from the community from which we draw our support base,” said club chairman Brian Mansbridge, who is pictured handing the cheque to Marilyn DeBattista of the Hospice.

“The further good news is that we have now forged this link with St Luke’s and will be working with them to promote awareness and fundraising for them and we will be inviting staff and volunteers to Rookery Hill on a regular basis from now on,” he added.
