Hot-shot makes swift return

Heybridge Swifts

Prolific striker Michael Cheek is back in the Ryman League with Heybridge Swifts.

The frontman left the Ryman North's Swifts for Chelmsford City earlier this summer to prove himself at Conference South level after plundering 25 goals last season.

He played for the Clarets during their friendlies but has re-joined the Swifts and scored in Tuesday night's 5-2 home win over Waltham Abbey, his first appearance since returning to Scraley Road.

Heybridge manager Mark Hawkes told the Maldon & Burnham Standard: "Michael signed for us at the start of the close season but then went to Chelmsford with our blessing. For whatever reason, it hasn’t worked out for him and it probably knocked him back a bit. But Chelmsford’s loss is our gain and now he’s fully focused on Heybridge Swifts."

Hawkes added: "He hasn’t trained with us during pre-season, so may take two or three weeks to get back to full fitness. But when he’s fit and firing, we’ll reap the benefits. He’s the kind of player who makes things happen."
