Hot-shot returns to Ryman's top flight

Hot-shot Tony Stokes has returned to the Ryman Premier with Canvey Island on a short-term loan from Conference South Concord Rangers.

Having struggled with injury at the start of the current campaign, the 26-year-old made the short trip across the island from the Gulls’ neighbours on Friday in an effort to gain match fitness with manager Danny Heale’s Park Lane squad in the run-up to Christmas.

Stokes, pictured, came through the ranks at West Ham United, spending time on loan with Rushden & Diamonds, Brighton, Stevenage Borough and Hungarian side Ujpest FC while with the Hammers. He joined Ujpest on a permanent basis in 2009 before returning to England and signing for Concord Rangers ahead of the 2010-11 season. In 124 appearances for the Beachboys, he scored 78 times and last season captained the club to their Ryman League Cup triumph and promotion to the Conference South via the play-offs.

Canvey Island are away at Margate's Hartsdown Park on Saturday in the Ryman Premier.
