Hunt starts to replace Freeman

Peachaven & Telscombe chairman Brian Suckling has started the hunt to appoint a successor to Darren Freeman after the former Brighton forward left on Tuesday to take charge at Ryman Premier Lewes.

The 42-year-old, who arrived at the Magpies in the summer having being out of the game, stood down after two months at the helm to return to the club where he kicked off his playing career as the successor to Steve Brown at the Dripping Pan. Assistant manager and goalkeeping coach Ross Standen also stood down to make the move to the Rooks.

As a manager, the former Albion favourite is best known for his time at Whitehawk where he oversaw their rise from the Sussex County League to National League South. Since arriving at The Sports Park, Freeman, pictured, has been transforming the Magpies squad and his efforts were starting to pay off with the club currently on a four game unbeaten run.

Suckling said: "I’m very disappointed Darren is leaving after such a short period. I do wish him every success at Lewes. We know that Lewes Football Club has a great heritage and great support – and this is not reflected in their current league position.

"I always knew there was a threat we could lose a high calibre manager that Darren is. We all wish him well and thank him for his hard work. We will do everything we can to retain our players and the search for a new manager begins now.”

In a statement on the East Sussex club's website, Freeman thanked the Magpies for the support they'd given him.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion, Fulham and Lewes forward said: “I do feel a little sad that I am leaving. I want to thank everyone at the club, especially the players, the fans, chairman Brian Suckling and all the committee.

"This has been a tough decision but I’ve made it for the sake of my footballing career. I want to manage as high as I can and I couldn’t miss this opportunity. I love a challenge and I’m passionate about football. I work hard and eat, drink, sleep the game.”
