International first for Oystermen

Whitstable Town

Whitstable Town have signed their first ever international after bringing former Football League defender Ian Cox back to the Ryman League.

The Ryman South's Oystermen announced on Thursday that the 42-year-old former Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Gillingham and Burnley star had signed for manager Nicky Southall.

The ex-Trinidad and Tobago international last played in the Ryman with Maidstone United back in 2009 when he announced his retirement from football due to his work commitments as a prison officer.

Cox, pictured scoring for Gillingham, played 16 times for the Caribbean island nation between 2000 and 2006. He could make his first start for the Oystermen on Saturday when they travel to Sittingbourne in search of their second win of the season after drawing 1-1 away at Hythe Town on Tuesday night.
