Maestro moved for promotion push

Canvey Island's new midfielder Tyron Smith is on a mission to win promotion with the Ryman League's Gulls.

Hampshire-based Smith completed his switch from Ryman Premier rivals Met Police in midweek and the creative midfielder reckons commuting from his Farnborough home to Essex won't be a problem after Canvey's manager Danny Heale told him they are determined to win silverware this season and go up.

The 26-year-old, pictured, signed on after making an instant impact in front of a 700-strong crowd at the Prospects Stadium last Monday night with a sensational free-kick against Millwall.

Smith, who helped the Met Police win the Ryman South title in 2011 and has previously played for Fleet Town, Basingstoke Town, Maidstone United, Farnborough and Aldershot, said: "The ambition here at Canvey is to go up this season. It is a very tough league but the minimum we want is play-offs, so we’ve all got to stick together, work hard and hopefully we will get there.

"I wanted to come here because Danny Heale told me they have a good squad and that they want to go up and win things. And that’s a massive thing for me.”
