Maher is taking nothing for granted

Redhill’s fans are dreaming of matching their best ever run in the FA Cup but manager Mike Maher is taking nothing for granted after Monday’s draw at Wembley for the Third Qualifying Round.

The Lobsters face a trip to Greenwich Borough at the penultimate qualifying stage and after seeing his own side knock out higher league opposition with a 2-1 win over the Ryman Premier’s Tonbridge Angels at the weekend, Maher is wary of being on the wrong end of a giant-killing at the Southern Counties East Football League outfit.

The Surrey club are in the Third Qualifying Round for the first time in years and on Tuesday Maher moved to calm expectations among supporters already looking back at their 1957 exploits when the Lobsters beat Tooting & Mitcham United to set up a trip to Norwich City in the First Round Proper. The Lobsters were beaten 6-1 at Carrow Road by their Football League opponents and Maher is also aware that they’ve still got to win two ties, starting with the south east London outfit on Saturday week.

Maher said: "We have naturally got to be pleased with drawing Greenwich Borough in the next round as we have avoided all the teams from the Conference and Ryman Premier. However, we are well aware of the strength of the Greenwich Borough squad. It is well known they are a club looking to achieve promotion this year, and the strength of their squad and individual players is incredible for a Southern Counties team."

He added: "We will treat them with the utmost respect and do our homework on them as we always do to give us the best possible chance of a positive result. As a club we are really looking forward to the game, however we have two extremely important league games before then to channel our focus."
