Mead's real life maidens of mercy!

Physio Carl Payne, pictured, and Kay Wellham rushed to the aid of Millers fan Barry Gibbs who collapsed in the bar with a severe allergic reaction after the Mead saw in 2017 with a 2-0 victory in Essex on Monday 2 January.

The heroines were presented with a bouquet of flowers by Thamesmead Town chairman Paul Bowden-Brown after the Aveley supporter wrote to the Ryman North club to praise the pair for their care before he was taken away from The Mill Field by ambulance.

Payne has had a 'busy' season having already dealt with keeper Andy Walker's broken knee cap at Great Wakering Rovers back in September and Town's proud officials later printed the letter of thanks in their matchday programme as a tribute to the women.

The Millers fan, who'd been waiting for his son - Aveley player Harry Gibbs - when he was taken ill, has since made a full recovery and he wrote: "Two of the people who really did help were from your club – one was a lady supporter and the other was, I think, your physio – again a lady. Both were very considerate and helped to keep me calm and I cannot tell you how grateful I was that they were both there for me at that time.

"Can you please pass on my sincere thanks to your physio for all she did for me and let her know that her help assisted in me making a full recovery and being allowed home about six hours later!

"I do not know the name of the lady supporter so it will be difficult to thank her but I will look for her the next time Aveley and Thamesmead play each other. They deserve a lot of credit and thanks. They are top girls in my opinion!”

Mead chairman Bowden-Brown said: "We're obviously delighted that Mr Gibbs has made a full recovery and we as a club are so proud of the actions of both Carly and Kay! Ladies we salute you!"

Walker is said to making "terrific" progress by the club's medical staff and is looking forward to the next stage of his recovery starting when the metal-work in his injured knee is taken out.
