Midfielder moves for title tilt

Wealdstone

Attacking midfielder Luke Pigden could make his debut for Wealdstone on Saturday after switching from Ryman Premier rivals Carshalton Athletic.

The 24-year-old, pictured, was the subject of a seven days notice of approach and was snapped up by Stones manager Gordon Bartlett after making 135 appearances for the Robins over almost four seasons.

The former Kingstonian, Leatherhead and AFC Wimbledon star, who can operate either on the left or in the centre of midfield, is the latest player to leave Colston Avenue following the departure of manager Tommy Williams earlier this month.

The player insists his former manager's exit played no part in his decision and that he moved to the Stones to fulfil his title ambitions.

Pigden, who could make his debut at home to Grays Athletic on Saturday, told the Sutton Guardian: "Wealdstone’s interest and seven-day approach came out of the blue, it was news to me. I know how good they are and I felt it was the right time to move on.

"This would have been my fourth season at Carshalton and leaving is tough but the set up at Wealdstone is too good a chance to miss. They are at the top of the table, so my challenge there is to get in the first team, and then win promotion."
