Minute's silence marks tragedy

Led by club chaplain Neil Durling, players and officials observed a minute's silence at the Longmead Stadium at 7pm after the 23-year-old passed away in tragic circumstances last summer while playing for Angels in a pre-season friendly at Whyteleafe.

The defender, pictured, collapsed on the pitch with 20 minutes to go after coming on as a second half substitute at Church Road. Despite being rushed to hospital after being treated at the scene by the medical teams of both clubs, he died hours later at St George's Hospital in south west London.

Angels launched their successful Football Fightback campaign in the wake of his death to raise funds for more than six hundred footballers in Kent to undergo heart screening. After teaming up with charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (C-R-Y) and setting an initial target of £21,000, more than £30,000 has been raised so far to fund screening and stop other young players dying needlessly.
