Moatsiders leave it late...but go third!

By Ian Townsend

Merstham's great run continues

For eighty two minutes Merstham and Worthing cancelled each other out on a freezing cold night at Moatside, and then, just when the match seemed to have nil-nil written all over it, up popped Kershaney Samuels with the goal that warmed up the home faithful and sent the Moatsiders up to third place in the Bostik Premier Division.

When Merstham suffered a home defeat to Leatherhead on December 11th, nobody would have imagined that they'd then go unbeaten for weeks on end, but victories over promotion candidates Lewes, Dorking Wanderers, Enfield Town and Worthing, as well as three points against Potters Bar Town, Wingate & Finchley, Carshalton Athletic and AFC Hornchurch- and draws with Kingstonian and the then-leaders Haringey Borough have seen them climb the table week after week, and go ten league matches unbeaten; the best form of any side in the Division. Twenty six points from their last thirty now leaves them six points behind leaders Wanderers and five behind second placed Borough.

Whatever happens over the rest of the season, Hayden Bird and his side are certainly sticking out their tongue at our supporters, who predicted back in August that they'd finish the season in sixteenth!

Merstham travel to Bishop's Stortford on Saturday- incidentally the only side to defeat them recently, on penalties in the Velocity Trophy. Can Stortford burst their bubble? Head along to the Prokit UK Stadium to find out!
