Moatsiders scoop TV jackpot!

By David Watters

Merstham are looking forward to flying the flag for the Ryman League in the Emirates FA Cup in front of millions after hitting the TV jackpot.

The Ryman Premier club's fans, players and officials are preparing for a lunchtime start against Oxford United in the first round proper on Saturday 5 November after BT Sport chose to broadcast the tie live.

The Football Association, BBC TV and the satellite broadcaster announced the TV schedules for the Emirates FA Cup on Wednesday. Like Eastleigh versus Swindon Town, who kick off the coverage on BBC2 on Friday night and Southport at home to Fleetwood Town on BT Sport on Monday 7 November, the Moatsiders and Oxford United will each receive a broadcast fee £67,500.

Almost 100 positions in the football pyramid separate Hayden Bird and his Moatsiders, currently 15th in the Ryman's top flight, from League One Oxford United. After already rewriting the club's history books with their 2-1 weekend win over Ebbsfleet in their first ever appearance in the fourth and final qualifying round, they'll be hoping to bank £18,000 in FA prize money in addition to the TV cash as winners of the 12.30pm kick-off.
