More cup delight for Soham

By Peter Butcher

SOHAM may be one of only two teams in the whole Ryman League without a point to their credit, but it has been a different story in cup competitions.

The side from Cambridgeshire thrashed Burnham Ramblers 5-1 in the FA Cup and tonight (Tuesday) they won 2-1 at Ryman North rivals Cheshunt in the first round of the League Cup.

Their prospects looked grim when Leon Archer scored after only two minutes on his return to Cheshunt, for whom he has been a prolific scorer in the past.

But Ryan Auger levelled the scores on 35 minutes and Rob Mason hit what proved to be the winner four minutes later, earning Soham an attractive second-round tie at home to Premier high-fliers Lowestoft in mid-October.

The only other first-round tie was at Chipstead, and visiting Three Bridges celebrated their first-ever game in the competition with a 3-0 victory.

Tim Rivers opened the scoring on 11 minutes, Marcus Elliott provided a two-goal cushion just before the interval and Saio Blackwood chipped in with a late third.

Bridges also have a plum home tie in the second round when they will entertain Premier leaders Hampton.

There was one league game in Ryman North and Aveley struck four times in 13 minutes either side of half-time on their way to a 4-1 victory at Redbridge.

Their first-half dominance was not rewarded until Shane Oakley scored in the 45th minute. Lee Sontag added another moments after the restart and Millers were soon out of sight as Oakley converted a penalty and Junior Dadson netted the fourth.

A real massacre threatened but, in the end, Jordon Watson's 78th-minute consolation for Redbridge was the only other goal.
