No rush to replace Newing at Towners

Enfield Town insist they are in no hurry to replace Steve Newing and will take their time finding the right successor to their former manager at the Ryman Premier’s Queen Elizabeth II Stadium.

Father and son caretaker managers Peter and Bryan Hammatt take charge of the Towners on Saturday when they host Dulwich Hamlet and on Friday the club confirmed they were in the running to become their permanent managerial duo, along with a number of other candidates who’ve come forward since Newing’s departure last week following their defeat to Wingate & Finchley.

The Towners beat Hertford Town 6-0 in a friendly on Tuesday night with the family duo at the helm and the club say they are happy to give them a chance to stake a claim as they continue to weigh up potential candidates.

Press officer Ciaran Glennon said: "Bryan and Peter Hammatt have already made a promising start with a midweek win over Hertford and they are among a number of options the club is considering. No announcement is imminent as we want to make sure we make the right appointment. In the meantime, we hope that all supporters will get behind Bryan and Peter and give them and the team all their support."

Peter Hammet has been well known to the club's supporters since becoming a member of former manager Jim Chandler’s coaching team more than a decade ago before returning to work under Newing. His midfielder son has been a fans' favourite since making his debut in 2005 and returned to the club during the 2011-12 season for his third spell. He has also seen service at Enfield, Wealdstone, Hertford Town, Boreham Wood, Northwood, Cheshunt, Wembley, Chesham United, Hayes, Slough Town and Hemel Hempstead Town.
