Witham Town officials have honoured their local MP by appointing Priti Patel as the Ryman Premier club's patron.

Patel, pictured, was appointed following a special meeting of the club's members at Spa Road on Monday night.

The 42-year-old was elected as MP for the Witham constituency in 2010 and cheered on the Essex club on Saturday when they hosted Weston-Super-Mare in the FA Cup's Fourth Qualifying Round.

The politician called her appointment a 'privilege and honour' and is backing Garry Kimble's side to build on their promotion in May to the Ryman's top flight and subsequent cup run which came to an end after the 2-1 reverse against the Conference South outfit.

Patel said: "This is a big season for The Town. They’ve made a strong start in the Ryman League Premier Division and have had a strong run in the FA Cup. The Town put in a great performance in Saturday's match and showed we can compete with teams in higher leagues. Witham can be extremely proud of the results that Garry and his team are delivering and the success they are having."

She added: "I have always been very impressed by the club’s strong links in the local community and their support for youth football which is producing outstanding young footballers. The vision that Tony Last [Witham's late chairman who passed away in the summer] gave the club is being fulfilled and it is a privilege and honour to be asked to be The Town’s patron."

Town's manager Garry Kimble said: "Priti is passionate about Witham and a strong supporter of the club. She is committed to helping the club grow, improve our facilities and strengthen our youth football teams. We are looking forward to working with her to bring more success to The Town."
