Rainford coup signals intent

AFC Hornchurch manager Jimmy McFarlane demonstrated his side's Ryman Premier title ambitions on Friday night with the signing of Chelmsford City legend Dave Rainford.

McFarlane snapped up the 34-year-old veteran midfielder, pictured, after he asked to leave the Conference South's Clarets. During his five years at Melbourne Park, the all-action Rainford made more than 150 appearances and scored nearly 50 goals.

The Urchins say Rainford, who skippered City and in 2012 was appointed assistant manager, will go straight into McFarlane's squad for their trip to Lowestoft Town on Saturday and will also join the coaching staff.

Now a vastly experienced campaigner, Rainford kicked off his career at Colchester United before spells at Wivenhoe Town, Scarborough, Grays Athletic, Heybridge Swifts, Ford United, Slough Town, Bishop's Stortford and Dagenham & Redbridge.

In statement on their website announcing Rainford's arrival, the Urchins said: "A huge favourite at Melbourne Park for his drive and leadership, Dave will add vital strength and experience to the middle of the park."
