Robert Dyas League Cup, action review

Ryman League

There were a handful of matches in the Ryman League`s Robert Dyas League Cup this week but plenty of action in the second round fixtures, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Premier Division high-flyers Maidstone United made no mistake at the Gallagher Stadium in front of a decent crowd of 417 against Ryman South neighbours Herne Bay.

The Stones had the tie won in the first half as they went into the break 5-0 up, courtesy of goals from Mark Lovell with two, Alex Akrofi, Ben Greenhalgh and Alfie Kitt – Richard Davies scoring the only second half goal.

Maidstone's league rivals Witham Town had a 2-0 win at Essex Ryman North neighbours Brightlingsea Regent, thanks to goals from Lewis Godbold after just seven minutes and Danny Emmanuel four minutes from time.

Ryman South East Grinstead Town produced the 'upset' of the week, beating Premier Division Peacehaven & Telscombe 2-1 at home.

Romario Hart gave the hosts the boost of an early third minute lead that Stefan Joseph doubled eight minutes before the break. Joe Gatting pulled one back just past the hour-mark, but East Grinstead held on.

And then on Wednesday, Burgess Hill Town hammered Ryman South Sussex rivals Horsham 5-1 with both Callum Saunders and Dan Perry bagging braces and Luke Doherty the other – Max Miller having equalised on 24 minutes for the Hornets.
