Rocks find their scoring touch

By Peter Butcher

WHEN John Sands pounced on a loose ball to equalise for Bury at Bognor ten minutes after half-time on Saturday, the home fans must have been resigned to dropping at least two Ryman Premier points. After all, the long-range shot from Terry Dodd which had p

But Ashley Robinson restored their lead midway through the half and Rocks well and truly rediscovered their scoring touch with three more in the last seven minutes. Lewis Stockford started the rush with a solo effort and James Crane added two more to make it 5-1, a result which lifted Bognor into the play-off places and booted Bury out of them.

Concord also moved into the top five with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Thurrock. The home side maintained their improved form in the first half but failed to capitalise, and a 55th-minute header by Nicky Cowley was enough to give the Beachboys all three points.

Hampton, who started the season so well, are down to sixth after a 2-1 home defeat by Margate (action pictured by Don Walker: Hampton in red). Dan Stubbs fired the visitors ahead on 13 minutes but Gary Holloway levelled it 11 minutes later when Charlie Moone’s header came back off a post.

Matt Bodkin scored his first of the season two minutes after half-time and that was enough for Margate, who now trail leaders Whitehawk only on goal difference after the Hawks were held to a drab 0-0 draw by Harrow at East Brighton Park. Both sides had a goal disallowed but the scoreline was a fair reflection of the game.

Third-placed Wealdstone are a point off the pace with two games in hand after their 2-1 home win over lowly Hendon. Stones were far from their best but goals at either end of the second half from Lee Chappell and Nathan Webb were enough. Belal Aite-Ouakrim replied when it was too late to matter.

Hendon remain 21st, with Carshalton still behind them on goal difference after losing a crunch clash at Leiston, whose 1-0 victory was only their second of the season and lifted them above Thurrock to 19th place. Carshalton had the upper hand for the first half-hour but then Leiston took control and substitute Leon Ottley-Gooch, in his first outing for eight weeks, grabbed the all-important goal in the 73rd minute.

Lowestoft moved to within striking distance of the play-off places as they wiped out a two-goal deficit to win 3-2 at Enfield Town. Jon Hunt’s free-kick gave the hosts an early lead which Adam Wallace doubled in the 25th minute. Jack Defty’s header started the comeback four minutes later and Chris Henderson squared it early in the second half. Michael Frew netted the winner when a corner went loose in the 82nd minute.

Andre McCollin hit a hat-trick for Kingstonian, taking his league tally into double figures and making him the division’s joint-top scorer, but it was all in vain as K’s went down 4-3 at Canvey. McCollin opened his account early in the game but two goals in a minute on the half-hour, from James Hawes and Louis Dennis, turned it round and Rob King made it 3-1 at the break.

McCollin pulled one back in the 49th minute and equalised on the hour, after which K’s dominated, hitting the bar twice, only for Bradley Woods-Garness to snatch a last-minute breakaway winner for the islanders.

Met Police came from behind to win 3-1 at Wingate. Jordan Fowler’s deflected shot gave the hosts a 15th-minute lead which Craig Brown wiped out in the 32nd minute. The decisive moment came ten minutes after half-time, when home keeper Bobby Smith let Aaron Wickham’s harmless shot through his legs to put the Met ahead, and Steve Sutherland headed the third.

The 1-1 scoreline at Lewes was predictable: both they and visiting East Thurrock have drawn more than half their league games this season. Ben Godfrey put Lewes ahead after 26 minutes and Kris Newby replied with 13 minutes left.
