Ryman remembers air crash victims

By David Watters

East Grinstead Town and Corinthian-Casuals are among the Ryman League clubs who've been paying tribute to the victims of the Colombian air crash which all but wiped out Brazilian football team Chapecoense.

The clubs are pictured holding a minute's silence for the 77 people who lost their lives on Tuesday night before kicking off in their abandoned Ryman South clash at King George's Field in Tolworth.

Only six of passengers on board the plane - three players, two crew members and one journalist - survived Monday night's crash on a mountainside near the Colombian city of Medellin.

Chapecoense, playing in the Brazilian fourth tier as recently as 2009, were on their way to play Atletico Nacional in the Copa Sudamericana, South American football's secondary continental competition and the equivalent of the Europa League.

On Wednesday night, when the match had been due to take place, tens of thousands of fans gathered at the Medellin stadium - and at Chapecoense's home ground in Chapeco - to pay tearful tributes. Many wore white and carried candles as a mark of respect. In total, Chapecoense lost 19 players in the crash.

On Thursday, the Colombian authorities said that evidence is growing that the plane crashed because it ran out of fuel as it tried to land.
