Ryman South's midweek action review

Ryman League South Division

Leatherhead held on to top spot in Ryman South on Wednesday night despite being held to a draw by basement side Eastbourne Town.

But the Tanners head into the weekend leading the table by goal difference only after Walton Casuals drew level on points with a 2-1 away win at Corinthian Casuals 24 hours earlier.

Leatherhead will be scratching their heads after dropping points as they were 2-0 up going into the final minute thanks to goals from Kevin Terry in the first and Tom Bradbrook after 18 minutes. Town, still without a victory this season, had been hunting hard for an equaliser and it looked to be in vain before Billy Medlock and Andrew Mensah struck twice within a minute.

Casuals left it late too to grab maximum points at Corinthians and close the gap at the top, Conor French grabbing the winner in the final minute after Mario Quiassaca had earlier equalised Liam Collins' opener in the eighth minute.

A 2-0 defeat for Crawley Down Gatwick at Tooting & Mitcham United saw the Anvils lose ground and drop to third on Tuesday. Ryan Palmer, after seven minutes and Jay Cheadle on 56 minutes, secured a second home win of the season for the Terrors.

Ryman South newcomers Peacehaven & Telscombe are up into fifth after what must have been some game at Sports Park with seventh placed Horsham after the pair drew 5-5.

Billy Dunn put the visitors ahead after three minutes but the Magpies were ahead by half-time after Jamie Brotherton equalised on six minutes and then put them ahead after nine. John Jones ensured they were 3-1 up by the break when he found the net on 40 minutes and then added a second within two minutes of the restart to make it 4-1.

Horsham are in seventh for a reason and they showed why, bagging four second half goals to take the lead. Dunn again, from the penalty spot this time on 51 minutes, led the fight-back. Gary Garmam on 75 and then Jamie Cade with two goals in six minutes, gave them the lead before the shocked Magpies recovered and Tom Lawley grabbed a last minute leveller.

Chipstead climbed above Sittingbourne on Tuesday with a 2-1 success. The Chips went ahead on 70 minutes with Dan Moody scoring their second from the penalty spot a minute after Joe Taylor had equalised.

Worthing are just a point behind Three Bridges after narrowly overcoming their visitors, John Lansdale on 14 and Freddie Baker two minutes later putting them 2-0 up at the break. Elliott Romain pulled an early goal back after the restart to set the stage for a comeback but the visitors couldn't find a second against a dogged Worthing defence.

Redhill beat Faversham Town by the same scoreline at their place. Tre Mitford two minutes before the break and Richmond Kissi on 50 had the home side seemingly cruising to a first home win of the campaign. Danny Hopton pulled one back to ensure a nervous final ten minutes.

Walton & Hersham lost heavily at home on Tuesday night to a resurgent Merstham, the visitors taking a 4-0 lead with a brace of goals either side of the break before Louis Glace Palmer netted a consolation strike three minutes into time added on.

Lee Glace on 20 minutes and again after 70, along with Sam Tucknott on 35 minutes and Aaron Rule eight minutes from time, won it for Merstham.

At Whitstable's Belmont, James Morrish on 11, Scott Heard on 42 and a Charlie Smith brace in the 71st and 83rd minutes had the beating of Ramsgate who did pull one back through James Everitt with just under a quarter of an hour to go.

In Wednesday night's two other fixtures, Hythe were held to a 1-1 draw by Herne Bay while Guernsey are into the top half after their 3-0 success at Burgess Hill Town.

At the Reachfields Stadium an own goal from Shaun Welford on 35 minutes cost Hythe maximum points after Taser Hassan had given them the lead seven minutes earlier.

Guernsey's Marc McGrath put the Channel Islanders ahead at Leylands Park after just 14 minutes before Ross Allen on 63, and Allen again from the penalty spot with ten minutes to play, wrapped up their third win on the road since August.
