Samba Sports Golden Gloves Awards- January 2019

By Ian Townsend

Who had the meanest defence in December? Read on to find out!

Samba Sports are the UK's leading manufacturer of goals- and you can visit their website here. What you'll find, however, is that they are about much more than just the provision of goals! From balls to gloves, from corner flags to water bottles, from coaching aids to captains armbands, if you need it for your club the chances are that Samba will have it (note: they can't supply you with a free-scoring centre forward). They can ever provide you with new dugouts if the old ones are letting in the rain!

Thanks to Samba for their support- and here are our January Golden Gloves winners:

Premier Division

Merstham had a wonderful January, defeating Wingate & Finchley, Carshalton Athletic, Enfield Town, AFC Hornchurch and Worthing. But Carshalton Athletic can take a little credit, as they were the only team from that quintet to manage a goal- and they got only one! There was another match to take into account, against Kingstonian, but since that ended 0-0 there is no contest when deciding that Amadou Tangara and his miserly defence deserve enormous credit- and our award.

North Division

At the top of the Division, with three wins out of four and two clean sheets, there will be no prizes for anyone who guessed that Bowers & Pitsea were about to pick up our January gong. Andrew Wilton was ever-present, and picks up our prize.

South Central Division

January was a month when much of the South Central Division turned Amber. Cheshunt defeated Northwood, Ashford Town and Molesey, and earned a 1-1 draw against fellow promotion chasers Bracknell Town- but they earned something else too, our Golden Gloves Award for Harry Girling. Congratulations Harry!

South East Division

Horsham had an unusual December, in that they didn’t pick up any of our monthly awards. But they’ve managed to put that right in January! Three wins came with clean sheets, and only Guernsey and Phoenix Sports managed a goal, getting one each. Josh Pelling was ever-present- and indeed has already made 36 appearances this season- and given the Hornets defensive record this campaign this award was perhaps overdue. Well done to Josh, and to his defence.
