Saturday's Ryman North action review

By David Watters

Ryman League North Division

VCD Athletic went four points clear at the top of Ryman North table on Saturday, winning one of only two games played with most of the division involved in the FA Cup's First Qualifying Round.

But the Vickers extended their lead at the top the hard way against Ware, handing the third from bottom side two own goals to keep them in the game.

Aaron Cato made the first mistake, finding his own net after five minutes as the leaders went behind. Shirwin Stanley restored parity four minutes before the break before Karl Dent finally put them ahead with the first of his brace five minutes after the restart.

Dent's intervention was needed five minutes before the end after team-mate Peter Smith had earlier thrown the visitors a second lifeline with another goal at the wrong end on 76 minutes.

In Saturday's only other game, Erith & Belvedere slipped to their second home defeat of the campaign when they were well beaten 3-0 by Soham Town Rangers.

Soham have now won twice on the road thanks to Buster Harradine on 21 minutes, Luke Stanley after 32 and Scott Davies with just over a quarter of an hour to go.
