Saturday's Ryman North action review

By David Watters

Ryman North leaders Cray Wanderers remain five points clear at the top after edging out Romford by the odd goal in five on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Jake Giddings gave Boro a 27th minute lead at Ship Lane, only for the Wands to respond two minutes later through Ben Payne and then go ahead three minutes after that, courtesy of Nathan Fox.

Aryan Tajbaksh made it 3-1 right on the stroke of half-time, and Cray held firm until injury-time at the end of the game when Chinedu McKenzie pulled second back for Boro.

Second-placed AFC Hornchurch met second-bottom Haringey Borough at Bridge Road and ran out comfortable 4-1 winners, thanks mainly to a George Purcell hat-trick in the 10th, 26th from the spot and 75th minutes – Abd Thompson sandwiching the other Urchins goal on 56 minutes – Rakim Richards scoring a consolation for the visitors.

Bottom side Heybridge Swifts pulled up to within a point of Haringey after a 3-3 thriller against third-bottom Waltham Abbey.

The visitors took the lead on the stroke of half-time through Christian Assombalonga. Waltham then doubled their lead soon after the break when Ellis Lentell scored five minutes into the second half.

But Heybridge pulled a goal back on 59 minutes through Lewis Godbold and a minute later equalised through Jack Barham. The Abbots re-took the lead on 82 minutes with Assombalonga`s second but they couldn’t hold on to the lead as George Cole equalised six minutes from time.

Cheshunt missed the chance to go sixth when they were also held 3-3 at home by mid-table Wroxham.

Michael Sommerfield had the Yachtsmen in front after six minutes but Jason Hallett equalised right on half-time with the first of his hat-trick.

A Joe Gater own goal restored Wroxham`s lead three minutes after the break and Nathan Stone made it 3-1 on 64 minutes. But the Ambers fought back to level with two more from Hallett in the 73rd and 88th minutes.

Aveley were another side who could have overtaken FA Trophy giantkillers Tilbury into sixth spot, but they were beaten 4-2 at Mill Field b y mid-table Brightlingsea Regent.

Terry Rymer gave Regent the lead on 12 minutes and increased their lead when Phil Kelly scored right on the stroke of half-time. After the break, the home side were better and pulled a goal back when Petrit Elbi chipped the keeper from distance on 61 minutes.

But, Brightlingsea hit back with another goal when Josh Gould headed home two minutes later from Josh Mayhew’s free-kick. Regent made it 4-1 on 86 minutes when Russell Malton fired home from the edge of the box.

David Fallah then made it 4-2 as he pulled a goal back for Aveley, firing home the rebound to his penalty following a hand ball in the box, three minutes later.

Redbridge and Barkingside, two teams hovering just above the drop zone, shared a 2-2 Oakside Stadium draw.

Redbridge got off to a great start when Jay Knight put them in front after just two minutes from the spot. Reside Coxi Sebastfao then doubled the home side`s lead three minutes into the second half but Side battled back to level through sub Jonathan Nzengo after 72 minutes and Tyrone Scarlett 10 minutes later.

Witham Town came back from behind to win 2-1 at Julius Martin Lane against Soham Town Rangers.

The home side took the lead from the spot through Ryan Sharman on 44 minutes. However, Witham equalised almost immediately when Nathan Koranteng made it 1-1. And the visitors took the lead just past the hour-mark through Ryan Charles.

Harlow Town were many pundits` favourites for promotion pre-season, and they moved into eleventh spot with games in hand on all around them after an emphatic 4-0 win against ninth-placed Phoenix Sports.

Mario Noto gave the Hawks a great start with a goal inside the opening minute. Junior Dadson then bagged a brace in the 12th and 30th minutes, with Jared Small adding the fourth 11 minutes from time.

Even more emphatic were Dereham Town, who sandwich Harlow and Sports in the table after a 5-1 win at Great Wakering Rovers, who finished the game with ten-men.

It took the Deres 42 minutes to break through when Luke Tuttle scored and then Lewis Butcher netted a hat-trick in the 45th, 70th and 80th minutes.

Rovers had Stuart Hepburn sent-off nine minutes from time but managed an own goal reply a minute from time, although sub Robbie Linford made it a nap hand for the Deres in stoppage time.
