Saturday's Ryman Premier action review

Ryman League Premier Division

Wealdstone missed the opportunity to seal the Ryman League Premier Division title on Saturday when they were held to a 1-1 draw at Mill Field by Grays Athletic, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Bognor Regis Town`s 1-0 win at Nyewood Lane against a still-not-safe Wingate & Finchley means the Stones still require a point. But it could have been a little more worrying for Gordon Bartlett`s side as they trailed to Jordan Wilson`s 72nd minute opener until two minutes from the end of normal time when veteran Scott McGleish rescued them.

Bognor left it almost as late before scoring an 85th minute penalty winner from Sammy Igoe against Wingate. They then had to hold on for the last few seconds with ten-men after sub Dan Thompson was sent-off.

AFC Hornchurch split Wealdstone and Bognor in second but have played a game more.

They won 2-1 at Earlsmead against a still-not-safe Harrow Borough, thanks to goals from Chris Bourne after 24 minutes and Stefan Payne four minutes after half-time, with Marc Charles-Smith`s penalty reply 18 minutes from the end making it a nervy finale.

It`s remarkably tight at the top with only one point separating second from fifth and Maidstone United and Lowestoft Town still in with a chance of making the top five.

Fourth-placed Dulwich Hamlet were comprehensively beaten at New Lodge by Billericay Town as they failed to come to terms with a difficult pitch.

Goals from ex-Hamlet player Cedric Ngakam after just four minutes and Coskin Ekim on 33 minutes sealed the Blues` win. Hamlet missed a spot-kick chance to get back into the game, home keeper Billy Lumley diving low to his right to save Xavier Vidal's spot-kick.

Kingstonian are fifth after a vital 1-0 Kingsmeadow win over Lowestoft, thanks to a 75th minute effort from sub Dee Okojie.

And Maidstone are just about still alive in the race despite only managing a 1-1 draw at Enfield Town, whose Liam Hope cancelled out Frannie Collin`s eighth minute opener for the Stones from the spot five minutes before half-time.

It`s almost as tight at the other end with Enfield, Wingate, Harrow, East Thurrock United and Thamesmead Town all battling to avoid joining Cray Wanderers and Carshalton Athletic, who are already down.

East Thurrock went down to a 3-1 defeat at Victory Road to mid-table Leiston, despite taking a 30th minute lead through Sam Higgins.

Joe Francis eventually levelled on 57 minutes and then Craig Parker gave the Suffolk side the lead on 76 minutes, with Francis scoring his second and Leiston`s third three minutes later.

However, Thamesmead won 1-0 at Hampton & Richmond Borough to move to within two points of the Rocks, who have a crucial game in hand. Tyrus Gordon-Youngs proved to be Mead`s hero, netting a 52nd minute winner at the Beveree.

An even contest saw Margate held to a 1-1 draw against Lewes - a result that saw both teams safe from relegation.

Jefferson Louis's clinical finish midway through the first half was cancelled out on 65 minutes by Nick Wheeler, with neither team able to grab a winner.

Both relegated sides lost again, with Carshalton going down 3-0 at Metropolitan Police, whose Nigel Neita after 15 minutes, Ryan James on 62 and Tyrone Pink on 73 minutes were all on the mark while Cray were beaten by a Bury Town goal eight minutes from time from Colchester loanee Nnamdi Nwachuku at Ram Meadow.

Saturday`s other game saw Canvey Island and Hendon share a goalless draw – a result that virtually ended the Greens' hopes of a top five challenge.

However, it could have been different had Anthony Thomas' 78th minute penalty not been saved by Canvey`s impressive keeper Gines Guzman Rosique.
