Saturday's Ryman Premier action review

Ryman League Premier Division

Although Maidstone United fans couldn`t celebrate winning the Ryman League's Premier Division title on Saturday, their goalless draw at Dulwich Hamlet effectively won it, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Hendon also shared a 0-0 draw at play-off chasing Grays Athletic, meaning the outcome at Champion Hill in front of a crowd of 3,000 left the Stones six points clear of the Greens, who possess a game in hand but trail by 19 goals on goal difference.

Margate are assured of third place, but go into the play-offs in indifferent form – their 3-0 Hartsdown Park defeat by struggling VCD Athletic being their fifth game without a win.

However, the Vickers' win took them out of the drop zone for the first time in some time, courtesy of goals from James Duckworth after 18 minutes, Leigh Bremner six minutes later and then Michael Power five minutes into the second half.

The two other top five slots go the final game, with Dulwich in pole position in fourth on seventy-five points.

Enfield Town are fifth, two points behind Dulwich, with Metropolitan Police and Grays one and two points respectively behind Town.

Saturday saw ten-man Enfield share a 1-1 draw with East Thurrock United.

Bobby Devyne broke the deadlock to give Town a 72nd minute lead, but Sam Higgins equalised from the penalty spot nine minutes later. Ricky Gabriel was booked for bringing down David Bryant for the spot-kick and then received a second yellow card two minutes later.

The Met won 2-0 at the Village Glass Stadium – a result that sent hosts Witham Town straight back down.

Jake Reid put the Met in front after 57 minutes and Joe Turner completed the scoring a couple of minutes from the end.

Witham join Bury Town and AFC Hornchurch in suffering relegation – the Urchins going down a year after being runners-up in the promotion play-off final, after drawing 1-1 at home against a Peacehaven & Telscombe side who could well join them next week.

George Purcell put the Urchins in front after 34 minutes, but Tom Burton`s 74th minute equaliser gave Haven a draw and a chance of avoiding the drop if they win at home to Hampton & Richmond Borough next weekend and one of Lewes, VCD , Canvey Island or Harrow Borough don`t – Tonbridge Angels' goal difference should effectively see them safe.

Lewes go into the last game having suffered a 1-0 defeat at the Dripping Pan on Saturday against Leatherhead, whose Stacy Long scored on the stroke of half-time.

Canvey shared a 1-1 draw at Victory Road against Leiston where Tom Winter gave the home side a 41st minute lead and Jack Simmons levelled 16 minutes from time.

Harrow ended Kingstonian`s outside chances of a play-off place with a 2-0 win at Earlsmead, courtesy of Ryan Hope after 38 minutes and Marc Charles-Smith from the spot on 67 minutes.

Elsewhere, Billericay Town and Tonbridge shared a 3-3 New Lodge draw which effectively keeps Angels up due to their goal difference.

It was a remarkable game which saw Tonbridge race into a 3-0 lead with goals from Mitchell Pinnock after 22 minutes and then Nathan Elder on 62 minutes and Dee Okijie with less than six minutes remaining.

But Richard Halle reduced the arrears from the spot a minute later and then Rowan Liburd pulled another back on 87 minutes and sub Shameek Farrell amazingly equalised in the last minute of normal time. Angels then had a chance to win it in stoppage time but Ricay `keeper Joe Wright saved Pinnock`s penalty!

Already-relegated Bury Town lost 1-0 at the Beveree against Hampton, whose Tom Collins` 88th minute goal meant they were safe, while Wingate & Finchley saw off Bognor Regis Town 4-1 at the Harry Abrahams Stadium.

Ollie Pearce put the Rocks in front after 31 minutes, but Tommy Tejan-Sie eventually equalised on 68 minutes and then top scorer David Knight bagged a brace on 71 and 81 minutes, sandwiched by one from Bradley Hewitt on 78 minutes.
