Special edition is a tribute to the fallen

Herne Bay

As well as posting a mixed squad photo on a new website to commemorate the centenary of the famous Christmas Truce of World War One, Herne Bay produced an eight page special in their matchday programme for last Saturday's Ryman South clash with Three Bridges to support the nationwide tribute.

Clubs from the Premier League down took part in 'Football Remembers Week' by having the photos taken before kick-off for www.footballremembers.com to emulate similar snaps taken by soldiers in 1914 when they laid down their arms to play football and celebrate Christmas with their foes.

The Bay, along with a host of Ryman League clubs including Burgess Hill Town, Brentwood, Corinthian Casuals, Dulwich Hamlet, Faversham, Folkestone Invicta, Harlow, Horsham, Peacehaven & Telscombe, Ramsgate, Walton & Hersham and Whyteleafe took part to create a unique photographic record of football a century after the first global conflict that will now be preserved for future generations.

* The Isthmian League players killed in the First World War were among those commemorated on Remembrance Sunday as part of the Football Association’s campaign to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the global conflict.

More than 16 million died between 1914-18 and among them were 73 players from the 11 member clubs who constituted the league at the outbreak of war - Clapton, Dulwich Hamlet, Ilford, London Caledonians, Leytonstone, New Crusaders, Nunhead, Oxford City, Shepherd’s Bush, West Norwood and Woking.

Like leagues across the country, the Isthmian paid a heavy toll after suspending competition in September 1914, six weeks after hostilities broke out. London Caledonians, who’d just won the championship for the third season running, and Dulwich Hamlet, were among the clubs who lost the most men in the fighting but every club was hit, some never to recover after a generation was cut down.
